Opportunity: Lead artist, Sensitive Spaces,  New Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary

Do you want to create artworks which makes a difference? Support and help create an environment for difficult conversations and life changing experiences at the new NHS Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.

Creating sensitive spaces for challenging conversations and end of life experiences is increasingly important for patient centred care. We are looking for the right artist or designer to develop an integrated approach across a number of different spaces for the new NHS Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.

Through recognising that some of the very best things and the most difficult things in life occur in hospitals, this project seeks to develop an ethos and a series of grounded projects which seek to enhance environments to support the range of experiences for staff, volunteers, patients and visitors in this state-of-the-art, thoughtfully designed new hospital for Dumfries & Galloway.

The artist will work closely with the Spiritual Care lead of NHS Dumfries and Galloway and interest groups to explore issues concerned with challenging conversations, end of life and remembrance with hospital staff and the wider community. This work will inform the work for areas in the hospital identified as “sensitive spaces” as well as feed into aspects of the work undertaken by the spiritual care team in preparation for how the new sanctuary may be used in the new hospital.

We are looking for an artist/practice to firstly undertake a research/residency which works closely with the Spiritual Care team identify create principles for the bereavement suits, oncology, the interview rooms, palliative care and the sanctuary. They may bring other arts professionals, who’s work is in keeping with the creative principles and the aesthetics which emerge from the research, and commission them to create emotionally intelligent artwork which responds to the research.

The total project value is approximately £100,000 ex vat inclusive of all fees and materials – implementation element of the budget subject to fundraising. The fee for this first stage is £5,500 ex vat.
